Women’s Adventure available on Kindle

Women’s Adventure, an outdoor sports, travel and lifestyle magazine designed for women, is now available on Amazon’s Kindle reader making it the first outdoors magazine available for download on the device.
The Kindle 2, which launched earlier this year and sells for $360, is a technology-lover’s book (or magazine) that gives users a way to read a paperless book or magazine, listen to music, and even explore simple pages on the Internet.
Boulder-based Women’s Adventure, which comes every two months, can easily be downloaded to the Kindle for $2.99 per issue.
That’s compared to a yearly print subscription of $18 – which is $3 per copy.
When you download the issue, it won’t come with all the pictures or stories (albeit most stories), but the fact that you can download a magazine to a device with dimensions of 8 inches by 5.3 inches by .36 inches and a weight of just 10.2 ounces is pretty cool.
To make it more impressive, Women’s Adventure is the only outdoors magazine available on the Kindle – it joins publications such as Time, U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest.
The January/February issue, which hit shelves Feb. 27, is the first Women’s Adventure available on the Kindle, and the March/April issue is scheduled to be available later this month.

Turn your iPhone into a GPS unit

Navionics, a Wareham, Mass.-based electronic cartography and navigation data supply company, launched an iPhone app that turns your phone into a charting tool, it announced today.
The Navionics Mobile lets you view in-depth charts using your GPS position, and allows you to pan and zoom, query chart objects and more. The app also has outdoor and ski trail data, so you can navigate while skiing, hiking or biking.
Unfortunately, skiers and boarders won’t reap much benefit from it yet unless you plan on heading to Europe. As of now, the application only has ski trail data for more than 450 resorts in the Alps.
“We are working on the U.S.,” said Chris Gelinas, Navionics marketing assistant. “It is in the works.”
Next year about 150 ski resorts will be included in the app as well as snowmobile and ATV routes, according to the company.
Come the first quarter of 2009, U.S. iPhone users can download the app from the iTunes store and start using it to explore. The company is also working to develop a similar application for other smart phones.
The company isn’t disclosing how much the downloads will cost though.
